Earlier this summer, I interviewed the 33rd General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (Alpha Phi Alpha), Rev. Herman “Skip” Mason in his office on the campus of Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA. The article is featured in the “Executive Suite” section of the Savoy Professional magazine summer issue now available at Barnes & Noble and Borders bookstores nationwide.
This was a special honor for me to interview a young, dynamic leader of such a distinguished organization and also because I am a member of Alpha Phi Alpha (Spring ’93, Emporia State University). It was a tremendous reminder of the excellence and historic contributions Alpha has made as an organization.
Brother Mason is an ordained minister, recognized historian, published author and Interim Director of Student Affairs and College Archivist at Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA. As an Alpha he has a distinguished record of activity and commitment that has accompanied his ascent into his role as General President of the oldest of all collegiate black fraternities and sororities recognized by the National Pan Hellenic Council. During our interview we examined his role in leading Alpha Phi Alpha into a second century of distinction. He shared his insight on Alpha refreshing their impact as a leading social and civic organization impacting community with a specific focus on developing excellence in African American male youths.
“Alpha Phi Alpha must be in the vanguard for leading young men onward and upward toward the light. Given the statistics that have been out for years regarding African American male youths, getting them through elementary, high school and college is critical,” Mason shared in our interview underscoring his national initiative for the fraternity “From the High Chair to Higher Education”.
Alpha Phi Alpha continues to represent a talented assembly of men committed to creating change and are building successful partnerships with major corporate support including Abercrombie & Fitch.
